Hayley Davies and Carolynne Keating 

Hayley and I are joint leads of Sunshine class. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and have developed our own bespoke assessment tool to ensure we can offer suitable goals for every child and measure progress accurately.

We have a fantastic classroom with many excellent resources and a great outside space. We spend time in our soft play area where the children can stretch and relax, work on their physio exercises or enjoy the sensory lights.

We have lots of fun and especially love messy play where the children have the opportunity experience sand, water, gloop, jelly and many more interesting textures. We enjoy sensory stories, number rhymes and have fun in the home corner and so much more!

We offer unique and individual learning opportunities to suit each child. A lot of our curriculum is sensory based to unlock the world and connect the children to learning. We work on independence skills to allow each child to reach their full potential and access the curriculum.

Incorporated into our school day are the communication, physio and OT needs of each child.

Rainbow class is a mixed ability class of mainly Key stage 2 children.  Using a thematic approach we ensure coverage across all curriculum areas, with a daily focus on maths and English.

PSHE is woven into our everyday life. We encourage all children to develop their independence skills to the best of their ability, gaining confidence and life skills during their journey with us. They are encouraged to develop their social skills through playtime with their peers and with less familiar people when out in the community.

In Pluto Class the lessons are adapted and tailored to the individual needs of the children and we make them fun, energetic and engaging! Lessons are around twenty minutes each and we also play lots of games to reinforce our learning. 

We work hard on communication skills and get the chance to practice these with regular trips out in the community. We also work on physical targets – using standing frames, walkers, yoga, massage and stretches. We like to make use of the outdoor spaces, so if our classroom is empty we can often be found outside doing our learning!

Anca Hastings

My name is Anca Hastings and I am the class teacher. In Venus class we aspire to achieve a good balance between independence, academic and both physical and mental wellbeing for our children.

We aim to prepare our children for their next step in education, College life.

We follow a varied curriculum that includes the traditional subjects such as Maths, English, Science but also the holistic ones like Yoga and our Enrichment afternoon.

Our children also take part in Communication and Makaton sessions and benefit from the support of different outside agencies.

Together with my team , we seek to deliver a day of enjoyment and education every day for our amazing learners.

Jupiter class is a class of predominantly key stage 3 and 4 pupils, aged 11-16. Using a thematic approach, we ensure coverage across all subject areas with some discreet learning taking place in subjects such as maths. Pupils may take exams such as entry level, functional skills or even GCSE where appropriate.  Lessons are designed to be child-friendly, fun and functional!

There is also a focus on social and emotional well-being and building confidence in every pupil. PSHE lessons, for example, are regularly taught. Much of what we do is based around equipping the pupils for later life and giving them the ability to be their own advocate.

Galaxy class is a mixed age group of students With Complex needs. We follow a bespoke sensory curriculum engaging the students in a creative learning experience. It covers the development of the senses dependent on need and ability. Our key drivers are through communication, engagement and independence. Students are at the centre of their learning making choices and recognising their likes and dislikes.

At Southview College our aim is to provide all our students with the skills and knowledge to fully prepare them for taking the next steps into their future.  Students experience a rich and diverse curriculum which encompasses seven areas focusing on independence, communication, social and life skills. Within each area students are set shared targets which are tailored and unique to suit their needs. The College experience gives students the opportunity to practice and expand these skills into new settings and situations whilst still supported and guided by college staff.  College students regularly access the community, engage in enterprise and fundraising projects and take part in work related experiences. College is a different experience for students, a transitional stage which supports new experiences, encourages students to develop their identity, make informed choices and feel happy and confident about themselves.
